The Unites States Preventative Services Task Force is one of the major brain trusts of modern medicine, specifically this international group works to develop evidence based guidelines for medical care. For instance, they answer questions like, “Should we screen people for colon cancer, and if so, who?”. https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org

Choosing Wisely is another good patient information site. They address every basic medical issue you can think of and give a 2 page run down on all the basics you need to know. If you are looking at getting a procedure or worried about a diagnosis (theoretically, or you have been diagnosed) then this is a good place to start. Often, people who have no medical/scientific background do not know where to start or what questions to ask. These summaries are a great place to start. http://www.choosingwisely.org/

Similarly, the Mayo Clinic has great patient information write ups and is a good place to start with someone who has questions. https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-care-and-health-information
